Stoughton Public Library (SPL) has announced their Calendar of Events for the month of September. The month of leaves starting to change their colors and children starting school features exciting new events as well as fun and interesting familiar ones.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. In addition to getting a library card and taking advantage of what SPL has to offer, “Show Your Card and Save” is returning to Stoughton. More information will be provided at a later date.
SPL is partnering with Stoughton’s Public Works Department for the second Fix-It Clinic in October. The library is currently seeking Stoughton residents to volunteer as “coaches” who have the skills they can share to help residents fix household items. Residents can bring clothing in need of mending as well as small electrical items, handheld electronics, jewelry, and wooded items.
The Fix-it Clinic is a collaborative effort between SPL and the Public Works Department to reduce landfill waste.
Adult Programs
Author Ruth Weiner of Sharon will speak at the library on September 3 at 6:30 in the Community Room. Weiner, who taught at Stoughton High School for 25 years, will discuss the writing process and read excerpts from her books. Registration is recommended but not required.
Bob Gee will conduct a phototour of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 in the Community Room. Registration is recommended.
Bring Your Own Craft Club will meet on Wednesday, September 16, 6-8 P.M. in the Community Room. Creative types of all kinds can work side-by-side on whatever project they have and enjoy the company of fellow creatives. Registration is recommended.
English Teacher and film historian Frank Mandosa will host a retrospective on actor-director Clint Eastwood. Mandosa will speak on the actor/director known for bringing us films including “Grand Torino”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “The Man with No Name” Trilogy. The talk is scheduled to begin at 6:30 on September 17 via Zoom. Click here to register if you are interested.
The American History in Song, hosted by the duo “Sultana” will be presented in the Community Room on September 24. Sultana is comprised of Jon and Li Waterman. The Watermans will explore the roots of American popular music, railroads, and veterans, among other themes through original and traditional songs, storytelling, and slideshows. The presentation is sponsored by the Stoughton Cultural Council, which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Registration for this event is recommended.
Christine will host Retro Crafting in the Community Room on September 29. Interested parties can try some nostalgic items including Spirograph, Etch A Sketch, and Gimp. You can also bring an item to decorate with puffy paint, if you would like. Retro Crafting will feature music from the ’80s and ’90s, and registration is required. The event will run from 6:00-8:00 P.M.
Virtual Book Discussion
Stoughton Library will host a virtual book discussion via Zoom on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 P.M. The topic of conversation will be Mikita Brottman’s “Guilty Creatures”. Registration for the event is required.
Teen Programs
The Teen Space is open at the Stoughton Public Library Tuesday through Thursday, 2:30-4:45. Teens are invited to hang out, play board games and card games, work on craft supplies or play video games.
Bookish Buds Reading Club will meet on Mondays at Halloran Park, 2:30-5:30. Weather permitting, teenagers can bring their own book and read together.
Members of the Bookish Buds are identified by the pin they wear, Pins can be picked up at the Teen Maker Space.
Future leaders can earn community service hours by joining the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Tab will meet on Monday, September 14, 5:30-6:30 in the Community Room to help plan and run teen events, and recommend books and other young adult materials. TAB is open to teens in grades 6-12. Registration is required.
Thursday, September 17 is an Early Release Movie Day for teens. “Shrek” will play in the Community Room beginning at 1:00. The Early Release Day is open to teens in grades 6-12. Registration is encouraged.
Nita Trivedi conducts “Bollywood Rhythms” in the Community Room on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00. Teens are invited to learn storytelling through the classical dance form of Kathak. No experience is necessary for this activity. Registration is required, and be prepared to dance barefoot!
Fall Tote Bag Painting will be in the Community Room on Monday, September 21 at 5:00. Registration is required to paint your own fall-themed tote bag.
Children’s Programs
Little Lego Club for children ages 1-6 is on Monday, September 14 at 10:00. Duplos, Magnatiles, and bristle builders are available for the kids for one hour.
Children ages 5-12 are invited to Drop in and Craft and Build on Monday, September 28 at 3:30. Legos and crafting supplies will be made available to children for free building and creativity.
Drop in Chess for children ages 5-12 is on Wednesdays at 5:00/ Children are expected to have a basic knowledge of the game, but some instruction can be provided by volunteers. Parents must remain with children for this activity.
Ms. Peggy will host Teddy Bear Storytime for children ages 3 and up on Wednesdays at 3:00. Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed friend.
Baby Storytime begins on September 11.Ms. Amy and Ms. Stacey will host a fun-filled half-hour of storybooks, bubbles, and more.
SPL will host a movie night on Wednesday, September 30. “No Impact Man”, about a family trying to reduce waste, will begin at 6:00 with a discussion to follow. Refreshments will be served.
